TUSC

TUSC stands for The Unique Speaking Club. This is an activity that we will do every Day 6. The goal of TUSC is to work on our speaking skills and increase our confidence in expressing ourselves in front of others. We are going to work on this skill throughout the year and have fun at the same time!

There will be 10 different jobs that you will be assigned throughout the year:

1.) Chairperson/Timer

The Chairperson must run the meeting. You will be in charge of the agenda, as well as announce and time each student’s presentation.

2.) Oral Reading (3-5 min)

You will select a picture book (or section from a book) to read aloud to the class. Make sure you can finish it in 3-5 min.

3.) If You Knew Me

Interview someone from your classroom (or someone else in the school that several of your classmates know) using the “If You Knew Me” form. Read the answers aloud and see if anyone can guess the person.

4.) Jokes & Riddles (3 min)

Tell riddles or jokes that are in good taste and do not offend anyone inside or outside of our classroom. Please practice/share your jokes/riddles with an adult before you share them with the class.

5.) Media Critic (3 min)

Write and share a review of a movie or book you have seen/read recently. Include what it was about (without giving too much away), if you liked or disliked it, who might enjoy this type of book/film, and a rating out of 10.

6.) Wacky Animal Facts (3 min)

Choose an animal or insect. Research and select several interesting and unique facts about that animal/insect. Present your findings to the class. Remember, we have lots of resources in the classroom!

7.) Take the Turtle (3-5min)

You will take our stuffed mascot for the week and take it to various locations/events. Take pictures documenting your week with Turtle. Bring the pictures to school (on a USB stick) or email them to Mrs. Orloff. You will share them with the class and you can talk about Turtle's week with you!

8.) Poetry (3 min)

Write or find poems that appeal to you. Include the name of the poem, author, and where you found it.

9.) Ask an Expert (3 min)

Formulate a series of questions about something that interests you. Interview an expert or find the answers through research. Share what you discovered with the class. Include how you got this information.

10.) Famous Canadian

Select a famous Canadian. Research and report some interesting facts about the person you have selected. (Why are they famous? Where were they born? Where do they live now?)

You will be evaluated on the following criteria:

All presentations should be PRACTICED and TIMED at home.

Below you will find the TUSC schedule for the year. The number corresponds to the job that you are responsible for preparing and presenting on that date. For example, if it lists a 5 beside your name on a particular date, you would be our "media critic" that day. (See above for a detailed description of the 10 TUSC jobs).
